Double Push Hands
Sunday, January 22, 10:00am-1:00pm

Picture
Double Push Hands, Exploring Taijiquan's Foundations with a Partner
Seminar participants will learn.
  • Double Push Hands' six techniques
  • The Eight Energies and Five Directions
  • Rooting and whole body motion
  • Basic neutralization skills

Taijiquan's two person drills are called Push Hands. Practicing with a partner greatly enhances the understanding of the Eight Energies and Five Directions, the foundations of Taijiquan as a discipline. The Eight Energies; Ward Off, Rollback, Press, Push, Pluck, Rend and Bump are the basic movement patterns of the solo form. The Five Directions; Forward, Backwards, Look to the Left, Beware the Right and Central Equilibrium, define the body's location and describe movement. All together the Eight Energies and the Five Directions are Taijiquan's basis for health and self defense.

Double Push Hands is a two person drill with six simple techniques. Double Push Hands helps practitioners distinguish and develop the Eight Energies and Five Directions. Double Push Hands focuses on smooth controlled motions to neutralize incoming force. Cooperative practice enhances learning, so the simple techniques help to rapidly teach the Eight Energies and Five Directions. Participants will also develop their “Root” and whole body movement. Root and whole body movement are the foundation of stability and power training in taijiquan.

In case of a snowstorm that day a makeup date is scheduled for the following Sunday, January 29, 10:00am-1:00pm.
