Shuai Jiao is a jacketed style of Chinese wrestling developed from traditional Manchu and Mongolian wrestling. While there are many distinct differences, Shuai Jiao is most commonly compared to Judo, and emphasizes throws, takedowns, and various grappling techniques.
This workshop is designed to accommodate all skill levels and will provide a comprehensive introduction to basic principles, strategies, and techniques found within Shuai Jiao practice.
Whether you’re looking to improve your standup wrestling game, enhance your mental focus, or just want to try a new physical activity, we encourage you to come experience this unique style of wrestling through immersive and hands-on training.

A jacket is required for this workshop. Judo, BJJ, or Karate gi’s are acceptable to use as well. If you have questions about jackets or the workshop please contact us.

Tye Tonkin is the owner and director of Sanda Fighting Arts. A martial arts practitioner and instructor with over 20 years experience, Tye studied Kenpo Karate for 6 years before moving to traditional Kung Fu, Tai Chi and Qigong.
Tye started as an assistant instructor for Averill’s Martial Arts Academy in New Hampshire. In 2007 he started Tonkin’s Martial arts, opening his own school in Essex Vermont. In 2012 he continued to teach Kung Fu, Taijiquan, Qigong and Meditation as a head instructor for Tandang Garimot Martial Arts & Wellness in Chicago Illinois
Tye has competed in many national competitions including the International Chinese Martial Arts Championship and Kung Fu Tai Chi Magazine Championship. He won several medals and awards for barehand and weapons forms, sparring, and push hands in both internal and external categories, winning a title of Grand Champion in 2014.

Jonathan Chang began his practice of Traditional Chinese Martial Arts at the age of five at Yang's Martial Arts in Andover, MA. Under the guidance of Mr. Chris Fazzio, Jonathan progressed in the YMAA Shaolin curriculum for 15 years.
Beginning his teaching career in 2000, Jonathan has since aided and instructed at numerous seminars and training camps in the United States and worldwide. He has also competed and judged in various tournaments around the nation. (Competition Results)
In March 2008, Jonathan enrolled in the intensive 10-year training program at the YMAA California Retreat Center to train under the direct supervision of renowned martial arts teacher and author, Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming. He graduated June 2018 as the only Retreat Center student to earn YMAA Instructor certifications in both Shaolin and Taijiquan curriculums. He is a disciple of Dr. Yang.
In November 2013, Jonathan co-founded Barking Rabbit Media with Michelle Lin. Since then, the duo have spearheaded many productions for Dr. Yang, the YMAA Retreat Center, the YMAA Publication Center, Shining Link, Inc., and Newendao. They currently run WuAn Martial Arts.
